COA Announces Inauguration of New President
Sacramento, Calif. - The California Optometric Association (COA) is happy to announce the inauguration of Stevin Minie, OD, as its president.
Dr. Minie, a member of COA’s San Fernando Valley Optometric Society, is in his 27th year of practice and his been on the COA Board of Trustees since 2010.
He says he’s honored to take on the role of COA’s president.
“I am very proud and extremely grateful for the opportunity to serve as president of our association, the one organization that exists to advance our profession,” he said.
Dr. Minie says that with outside parties trying to undermine the importance of comprehensive eye exams, he has some challenges ahead of him.
“There is a huge personal and public health benefit to the optometrist-patient encounter,” he said. “We must constantly deliver this message, and challenge those who would say otherwise.”
Dr. Minie says he is most looking forward to leading the charge to pass SB 622.
“This bill will allow optometrists to elect to be trained to an advanced level certification, offering a greater scope of services to Californians, as is available in many other states,” Minie said.
Dr. Minie received his undergraduate degree from UC Santa Barbara and his doctor of optometry from the University of Houston College of Optometry in 1989. He is certified with the American Board of Optometry.
Dr. Minie volunteers patient care one day each month at MEND, a non-profit in Pacoima. He also serves as a preceptor for optometry students from Western University of Health Sciences.
Established in 1899, the California Optometric Association is California's oldest organized community for doctors of optometry. Representing doctors of optometry throughout the state, COA is dedicated to support and advance the profession of optometry to assure quality health care for all Californians.
