California mandates paid sick leave

Beginning July 1, 2015, virtually all California employers, including doctors of optometry, will be mandated to provide all employees with paid sick leave. Called the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014, employers will be required to provide up to 24 hours of paid sick time to current and new employees (see AB 1522). As the law is somewhat complicated, including sick leave accrual, carryover and documentation requirements, COA has prepared a fact sheet providing an overview of this new employer mandate. Non-compliance with the paid sick leave mandate can result in stiff penalties

Reminder: Beginning July 1, 2015, a new poster will be required to be posted in the practice by all doctors of optometry relative to the new paid sick leave sick leave. COA makes available the new poster plus the 16 other federal- and state-required workplace posters at a members-only substantial discount. As a bonus, a one-year subscription service is included with a poster purchase that provides updated posters and other notification requirements as they occur – required employment law notices can change any time in a calendar year. Click HERE to order or contact COA at (916) 441-3990 for more information.
