COA-backed pro-optometry candidates victorious in June primary

COA Member News

COA-supported legislative candidates Senator Ed Hernandez, OD, Assembly Member Roger Dickinson and Evan Low all came in first in their respective June 3 primary races with 100 percent of precincts reporting. COA produced and aired political radio advertisements in support of these three pro-optometric candidates.

Former COA president and state Senator Hernandez, D-West Covina, ran unopposed in his primary. Sitting Assembly Members Dickinson and Richard Pan, MD, squared off in a hotly contested race to fill the Senate vacancy created in this Sacramento-area district by termed out Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg. Dickinson claimed an impressive 9 percentage point lead over Pan, who was heavily supported by the California Medical Association. The two will face off again in the November General Election. Low, son of longtime COA member Dr. Art Low, came in with a commanding 13 percentage point lead over the second place candidate in this Silicon Valley Assembly district.
