Attention optometry student graduates: tips to help you start your career

COA Member News

1.     Be prepared for the search process.  Like any other graduating student, optometry students must also be prepared for the career search upon the conclusion of their studies. Leading up to graduation, you should polish your résumé and cover letters, while paying special attention to working on those vital interview skills. For résumé writing advice, career advancement webinars, and access to potential opportunities in your area, visitOptometrysCareerCenter.com.

2.     Know your options. In your quest for the perfect optometry position, researching your career options is a key to success. Some practical ways you can begin to discover your options in optometry are by getting connected with other optometrists in the field—either online or in person—finding and creating a relationship with a mentor and contacting  the local optometry society in the area in which you wish to practice for career information, as they can help make you aware of opportunities.

3.     Know your practice needs. The online COA Optometrist Resource Guide(member login required) is packed with information to aid new practitioners entering the practice of optometry. From how to obtain and maintain a license to practice, insurance coverage considerations, how to become a provider on public and private panels to employment resources and COA, AOA and local society membership resources and practice benefits.
