New Open Payments program will affect doctors

COA Member News

New guidance issued by the AOA’s Federal Relations Committee outlines the steps doctors of optometry should take now to prepare for the Open Payments program, aka "Sunshine Act," which was enacted to publicly disclose a health care provider’s financial relationship with certain manufacturers. ODs are not required to report anything. However, as patients and the general public will be able to view these reports on the Internet, affected doctors might wish to review and take action to correct, as appropriate, the information reported by the manufacturers to ensure its accuracy and protect their reputation.

Part of ACA, the program requires that that any payments, such as consulting fees, honorarium, gifts, food and beverage, travel and education, made by manufacturers of pharmaceuticals, medical devices and medical supplies to physicians, including ODs, be publicly disclosed. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has created a website to make this data publicly available beginning September 30. For more information on the AOA guidance, click here.
