CATEGORY	OLD STATUS	CURRENT STATUS	EFFECT
Ascending Dues Scale	Scale was based on optometry licensure date	Scale is based on optometry school graduation date	New COA members will be placed on the ascending dues scale based on their optometry school graduation year or post-graduate residency completion date rather than licensure year.
Retired	No age limit, 10 percent dues	Must be 55 years old, 10 percent dues to keep COA benefits or zero dues to continue membership in name only	Retired members who are age 55 or older as of Jan. 1, 2015, may apply for retired status. Those members who qualify for retired status may choose if they’d like to continue to receive COA, AOA and local society benefits.
Life	Discontinued	Reinstated. Must have been a member for 45 years.	Longtime members can apply for life membership and their dues will be waived if they qualify.
Dues Proration	All dues categories are subject to proration based on the date the member joined	Proration shall not be permitted when a member terminates membership and is reinstated to membership in the same calendar year	If membership is dropped and reinstated in the same calendar year, full annual dues will be assessed.

Applications for a change in membership classification submitted between Jan. 1 and April 30 will be retroactive to the beginning of the calendar year. Applications submitted between May 1 and Dec. 31 will be effective Jan. 1, 2016.
