Earn CE Hours and Get Paid as SBO Subject Matter Expert

 

Apply NOW to Assist in SBO’s Law Exam Development Workshops – Newer Licensees Encouraged to Apply!

Earn up to 16 continuing education (CE) credits, get paid $100 per day and take part in an opportunity to contribute to the profession of optometry. The State Board of Optometry (SBO) seeks doctors of optometry to serve as subject matter experts at workshops to develop, review and grade the California Law and Regulation Examination (CLRE). 

You will have the opportunity to meet ODs from around the state and, this service is a great opportunity to bolster your résumé. Many experts find the experience very rewarding and choose to return year after year. New licensees - five years or less - are encouraged to apply to ensure the entry-level perspective is maintained.

Logistical details for serving at a workshop are:

  • Location: Workshops take place in Sacramento and are conducted from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays.
  • Travel Arrangements: The SBO will complete the air and lodging arrangements, if necessary, for those who live 50 miles or more from the workshop site. Airfare is prepaid by the SBO. Hotel costs and other travel expenses (meals, mileage, and incidentals) will be reimbursed at California state government rates.
  • Honorarium: Participants will be paid an honorarium of $100.00 per day.

To qualify to serve as a subject matter expert, a licensee must:
 

        1. Possess a valid optometrist license that is not under suspension or probation.

2. Possess up-to-date skills. New licensees - five years or less - are encouraged to apply to ensure the entry-level perspective is maintained.

3. Agree not to participate at any time in any licensing examination coaching or   

preparation courses and must not be affiliated as a teacher with an optometric program. The Office of Professional Examinations Services enforces a stringent security policy and workshop participants will be required to sign confidentiality forms.

Law Examination Development Workshop Dates

Exam Cycle 1

  • March 2, 2015 (Monday): Item Writing (4 spots available)
    Participants write new exam questions. They work with a testing specialist and receive training on how to write exam questions. Note: If you are interested in this this workshop, you cannot participate in the Item Review Workshop.

  • March 23, 2015 (Monday): Item Review (3 spots available)
    Participants review current and new exam questions. They work with a testing specialist and receive training on hot to review exam questions. Note: If you are interested in the Item Review Workshop, you cannot participate in the Item Writing Workshop.

Exam Cycle 2:

  • April 20, 2015 (Monday): Exam Construction (3 spots available)
    Participants select questions for the 2014-2015 examination from a pool of test questions based on content-related criteria.

  • May 18, 2015 (Monday) – Passing Score (3 spots available)
    Under the facilitation of a testing specialist, participants apply minimum competence standards to establish a criterion-referenced passing score for the 2014-2015 examination.

  • June 8, 2015 (Monday) – Item Writing (6 spots available)
    Participants write new exam questions. They work with a testing specialist and receive training on how to write exam questions. Note: If you are interested n the Item Writing Workshop, you cannot participate in the Item Review Workshop.
