COA Strategic Plan – Charting COA’s Destiny

COA Member News

Begun in June of this year and adopted by the COA Board of Trustees (BOT) in September, the plan was developed by members of the BOT, COA committees and senior COA staff. Comprised of five fundamental goals, the plan contains a total of 24 strategies and 68 action items to guide measurable achievement of the goals that focus on membership growth and satisfaction, legislative and regulatory advocacy, promotion of the practice of optometry to the full extent of licensure, outreach and education of the public on the importance of vision and eye health and the role of doctors of optometry, and improved member communication. Dr. Rosten presented the plan to COA society leaders at their November Presidents’ Council meeting during which these doctors examined in depth three of the goals.

Underlying the implementation of the plan’s focus and accountability are the following tenets:

  • The plan establishes a visionary, quantifiable and accountable blueprint for measuring progression to attain its goals and ultimately move forward in achieving COA’s vision.
  • The plan provides a tool for COA to look ahead three years that capitalizes on association strengths and opportunities while minimizing weaknesses and outside threats. COA’s taking a proactive approach to its and the optometric profession’s future is much more cost-effective and profitable than being reactive.
  • The plan is a blueprint – it is not set in stone – which allows COA to revise goals, strategies and action items as internal and external circumstances evolve.
  • The plan ensures informed and strategic decision-making by COA governing bodies and committees. In carrying this out, the COA BOT reviews at each meeting the progress made toward achieving the goals. Further, the plan will be reviewed annually by the BOT, COA committees and senior COA staff to ensure it continues to reflect the vision, mission and values of the association.
  • The plan establishes a multi-year budgetary blueprint for strategic investment of resources to attain the defined goals. To that end, the proposed 2015 and 2016 COA budgets, to be considered by the COA House of Delegates in February 2015, include funding for those elements of the strategic plan that have a financial impact .
  • The plan lends itself to better align services, programs and activities with the COA vision.

Perhaps most important, attainment of the plan’s goals are made that much more possible given that people support that which they create. To view the COA Strategic Plan, click here [PDF]. To view the entire 33 page document, click here [PDF]
